India's "Sponsor-A-Cow Campaign"

Hariharananda Balashram in Pattamundai, Orissa  : Grassroots Asia originally contributed 18 cows who were housing in a temporary shed. Now, many of the cows have had calves and the family has grown to 60, with a brand new state of the art home. The Hariharananda Balashram resident home and school constructed a new cow shed for them in 2007. The dairy produces over 200 liters of milk a day, providing plenty of milk for the children and staff who reside there. Surplus milk is being traded in the market for fresh vegetables and kitchen supplies and is also subsidizing kitchen staff expense at the school. The Hariharananda Balashram is also making use of the cow dung to provide alternative energy which suppies almost 80% of the school's energy needs.

Saraswati Charitable Foundation  : 100 children with physical and mental limitations live and study at this new resident school outside Puri, Orissa. Grassroots Asia installed ceiling fans and lighting in the new school in 2004 and has also given construction funds for a new cow shed. Five cows were purchased in July 2005 and the dairy has now grown to 20. We also have contributed to their adult vocational training program.
